Tracing the Path of 23 Amphibious Engineer Squadron
Last year, I visited Edinburgh with my brother. One of the highlights of the trip, at least for me, was a visit to St Mary’s Cathedral — specifically to see the memorial plaque dedicated to Lieutenant Digby-Jones. I told my brother about his story, and he listened with genuine interest.
Lieutenant Digby-Jones was the only member of the 23 Field Engineer Squadron — the precursor of today’s 23 Amphibious Engineer Squadron of the Royal Engineers — to be posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross, one of the highest military honours for valour in the British Commonwealth.
This year, my brother embarked on a journey through South Africa with his best friend. When their route took them near Ladysmith, he recalled our trip to Edinburgh and what I had told him about Lt Digby-Jones. On impulse, the two of them decided to visit the cemetery in Ladysmith to find the grave of this remarkable officer.
They found it, paid their respects — and took several photographs of the gravesite for me. I’m deeply grateful to them. These images are now part of my collection on the history of the 23 Amphibious Engineer Squadron RE — and they hold special meaning for me. Respect!

Auf den Spuren der 23 Amphibious Engineer Squadron RE
Im vergangenen Jahr besuchte ich gemeinsam mit meinem Bruder Edinburgh. Ein besonderes Ziel auf unserer Reise war für mich die St. Mary’s Cathedral, genauer gesagt die Gedenktafel für Lieutenant Digby-Jones. Ich erzählte meinem Bruder von seiner Geschichte – und er hörte interessiert zu.
Lt. Digby-Jones war das einzige Mitglied der 23 Field Engineer Squadron, dem späteren Ursprung der 23 Amphibious Engineer Squadron der Royal Engineers, dem posthum das Victoria Cross verliehen wurde – eine der höchsten militärischen Auszeichnungen für Tapferkeit im britischen Commonwealth.
Dieses Jahr unternahm mein Bruder gemeinsam mit seinem besten Freund eine Reise durch Südafrika. Als ihre Route sie in die Nähe von Ladysmith führte, erinnerte er sich an unseren Besuch in Edinburgh und meine Erzählungen über Lt. Digby-Jones. Kurzerhand beschlossen die beiden, den Friedhof in Ladysmith aufzusuchen, um das Grab dieses außergewöhnlichen Offiziers zu finden.
Sie fanden es, zollten ihm ihren Respekt – und machten für mich einige Fotos der Grabstelle. Dafür bin ich ihnen sehr dankbar. Diese Bilder sind nun Teil meiner Sammlung über die Geschichte der 23 Amphibious Engineer Squadron RE – und für mich etwas ganz Besonderes. RESPEKT!
