“FREEDOM OF THE CITY”
🇬🇧 A short explanation 🇬🇧
“Freedom of the City” is a historic honour granted by cities to individuals or military units. Originally, it bestowed special privileges, such as the right to drive livestock through the city, access to markets and trade guilds, and for military units, the right to march through the city with weapons.
Today, it is a purely symbolic award given for significant contributions to the city or community. The British troops stationed in Hameln have certainly earned this honour, given how often they have stepped in to help.
This tradition dates back to the Middle Ages and is especially common in Commonwealth countries such as the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Australia.
The honour has been granted to the troops stationed in Hameln multiple times. I even have photos of some of the parades, or they have been provided to me—many thanks to all the supporters!

“Freedom of the City” ist eine historische Ehrung, die von Städten an Einzelpersonen oder militärische Einheiten verliehen wird. Ursprünglich gewährte sie besondere Privilegien, wie das Recht, Vieh durch die Stadt zu treiben, Zugang zu Märkten und Handelsgilden und für militärische Einheiten das Recht mit Waffen durch die Stadt zu marschieren.
Heute ist sie eine rein symbolische Auszeichnung, die für besondere Verdienste um die Stadt oder die Gemeinschaft vergeben wird. Und das haben sich die britischen Truppen in Hameln auf jeden Fall verdient, so oft wie sie helfend eingesprungen sind.
Diese Tradition hat ihren Ursprung im Mittelalter und ist vor allem in Ländern des Commonwealth, wie Großbritannien, Irland und Australien, verbreitet
Die Ehre wurde den in Hameln stationierten Truppen mehrfach gewährt. Von einige Paraden habe ich sogar Fotos bzw. wurden mir Fotos zur Verfügung gestellt, vielen Dank an alle Unterstützer!

eine grandiose Seite. Das Thema war mir, als ehemaligen Mitarbeiter der US Army, gar nicht so geläufig. Ich bin begeistert über die
vielen Fakten einer vergangenen Zeit und die vielen Kontakte die noch bestehen.
Weiter so, ich schaue öfter vorbei.

I was a young lad in Hameln during 1951-54.
My father was S/Sgt A.J Walker 43 field Park Sqd.
We moved to Hameln from Bielefeld. We were the first family(as a family = with children) in BAOR Arrived 6th Nov.1946.
Have great memories. Must say we loved it all .Hameln was a really nice place.

37 Fd Sqn following their participation in the first Gulf War were granted the Freedom of the City and marched through the town. This was followed by a banquet hosted by the town mayor and dignitories, in around March or April 1991.
