1st Reunion after closing the Gates

On 4 November 2014, Lt Col Scrivens closed the gate of the “GORDON BARRACKS” for the last time under British responsibility. Eight months later, on 19 July 2015, approximately 200 members of various squadrons and regiments gathered for the first time since the closure of the entire Hameln garrison.

Some guests arrived as early as Thursday and took advantage of the lovely weather to explore “their” town. The itinerary included the wine festival and the former favourite haunts of the British soldiers. Popular destinations included the “Badewanne,” the “Sudhaus” (formerly known as the Icebox), and the “Schultheiss.”

On Saturday, a boat trip with the “Weiße Flotte” was organised, which passed by the former sites of the Royal Engineers. The tour departed from the pier of the “Weiße Flotte” and journeyed through Wouldham Park along the Ohrschen Landstraße, extending several hundred metres beyond the former NATO training area in Ohr. After turning around, the excursion boat returned to Hameln after two hours. The afternoon and evening were dedicated to reminiscing about events from the past few years, and in some cases, even decades, during which many former comrades had not seen each other.

David Rudd, who has lived in Northern Ireland for many years, did not hesitate to make every effort to arrive in Hameln despite missing his flight – after all, it had been 44 years since his posting! Chris and his wife travelled over 600 miles to attend the reunion. Their journey was worthwhile, as Chris’s wife had a reunion with a colleague from her time at the Medical Centre of the “GORDON BARRACKS.”

On Saturday evening, the wine festival was in full swing, with splendid weather and a wonderful atmosphere. On Sunday, everyone met at the “Schultheiss” in anticipation of a visit to the “GORDON BARRACKS.” The veterans gathered at the Badewanne and walked across the grounds of the former BINDON BARRACKS, paying their respects at the memorial stone and the memorial place, before reconvening at the entrance of the “GORDON BARRACKS.”

Thomas Haeckel from the British-German Club in Hameln had the keys and welcomed the British comrades. Many felt a sense of nostalgia during the subsequent tour of the barracks, as it had long been their home. After an hour-long walk through the barracks, everyone proceeded to the “final BBQ” at the Schultheiss restaurant.

Am 4. November 2014 schloss Lt. Col. Scrivens zum letzten Mal das Tor der „GORDON BARRACKS“ unter britischer Verantwortung. Acht Monate später, am 19. Juli 2015, versammelten sich etwa 200 Angehörige verschiedener Squadrons und Regimenter zum ersten Mal nach der Schließung der gesamten Hamelner Garnison. 

Einige der Gäste reisten bereits am Donnerstag an und nutzten das schöne Wetter, um „ihre“ Stadt zu erkunden. Auf dem Programm standen das Weinfest und die ehemaligen Stammgaststätten der britischen Soldaten. Die „Badewanne“, das „Sudhaus“ (ehemals als Icebox bekannt) und das „Schultheiss“ waren beliebte Ziele. 

Am Samstag wurde eine Dampferfahrt mit der „Weißen Flotte“ organisiert, die an den alten Wirkungsstätten der Royal Engineers vorbeiführte. Vom Anleger der „Weißen Flotte“ ging die Tour über Wouldham Park an der Ohrschen Landstraße, bis sie einige hundert Meter über den ehemaligen NATO-Truppenübungsplatz in Ohr hinaus fuhr. Nach einer Wendung kehrte der Ausflugsdampfer nach zwei Stunden wieder nach Hameln zurück. Der Nachmittag und Abend standen im Zeichen des Austauschs über die Erlebnisse der letzten Jahre, ja sogar Jahrzehnte, in denen sich viele der ehemaligen Kameraden nicht gesehen hatten. 

David Rudd, der seit vielen Jahren in Nordirland lebt, ließ es sich nicht nehmen, trotz eines verpassten Fluges alle Anstrengungen zu unternehmen, um nach Hameln zu kommen – immerhin waren seit seiner Stationierung 44 Jahre vergangen! Chris und seine Frau fuhren über 600 Meilen, um an der Reunion teilzunehmen. Es hat sich gelohnt, denn Chris’ Frau traf eine Kollegin wieder, mit der sie im Medical Center der „GORDON BARRACKS“ zusammengearbeitet hatte. 

Am Samstagabend fand das Weinfest statt – bei tollem Wetter und bester Stimmung! Am Sonntag trafen sich alle am „Schultheiss“, da ein Besuch der „GORDON BARRACKS“ auf dem Programm stand. Die Veteranen versammelten sich an der Badewanne und spazierten über das Gelände der ehemaligen BINDON BARRACKS. Sie zollten dem Gedenkstein und dem Memorialplace ihren Tribut, bevor sie sich am Eingang der „GORDON BARRACKS“ trafen. 

Thomas Haeckel vom British-German-Club in Hameln hatte die Schlüssel und begrüßte die britischen Kameraden. Viele wurden beim anschließenden Rundgang durch die Kaserne wehmütig, war es doch lange ihr Zuhause gewesen. Nach dem einstündigen Spaziergang durch die Barracks ging es zum „Abschluss-BBQ“ ins Restaurant Schultheiß.

Kommt gt nach Hause und hoffentlich auf ein Wiedersehen im nächsten Jahr !
