Memories of Tony Smith
Tony Smith was stationed in Hameln with the 28 Amphibious Engineer Regiment in 1992. The photographs he kindly shared with me via Facebook provide an excellent insight into the operations of the Royal Engineers on the River Weser.
The images show the vehicles at the UPNOR training area, as well as en route to or from the lock at Hameln. In the background, the then “new” Weser Bridge is clearly visible.
Particularly striking is the first image in the series, which was taken from inside the driver’s cab of an M2 at the very moment the vehicle was being driven into the water by its crew.

Tony Smith war 1992 in Hameln beim 28 Amphibious Engineer Regiment stationiert. Die Aufnahmen, die er mir freundlicherweise über Facebook zur Verfügung gestellt hat, geben einen großartigen Einblick in den Einsatz der Royal Engineers auf der Weser.
Zu sehen sind die Fahrzeuge am UPNOR-Trainingsgelände, sowie auf der Fahrt von oder zur Schleuse in Hameln – im Hintergrund gut erkennbar die „neue“ Weserbrücke.
Besonders eindrucksvoll ist das erste Bild der Serie: Es entstand aus dem Inneren der Fahrerkabine einer M2, genau in dem Moment, als das Fahrzeug von seiner Crew ins Wasser gesteuert wurde.
Vielen Dank an Tony für diese außergewöhnlichen Bilder und den Blick zurück in eine spannende Zeit.
