Floods in Hamelin
Heavy rainfall combined with rapid snowmelt triggered a state of emergency in the district of Hamelin-Pyrmont on 15 January 1968. The flooding particularly affected the tributaries of the River Weser – the Hamel, Humme and Emmer. The situation was especially severe along the flood channel of the Hamel in the area between Rohrsen and Afferde, around the power station and the surrounding streets.
In response to the crisis, the city of Hamelin requested assistance from the local garrison, and, as on many occasions before, the British troops once again came to the aid of the population. Ritchie Smith, who was on duty at the time as a medical orderly with an ambulance truck on standby, later recognised in a Dewezet newspaper photograph the AEC lorries belonging to the 2nd Troop of the 23rd Amphibious Engineer Squadron.
The Deister- und Weserzeitung reported extensively on the flooding, not only in Hamelin itself but also in the surrounding communities. In addition to the fire brigade and the police, soldiers of the Bundeswehr assisted in the Lügde–Bad Pyrmont area, helping to prevent further damage and to support relief operations.

Hochwasser in Hameln
Heftige Regenfälle und die rasche Schneeschmelze führten am 15. Januar 1968 im Landkreis Hameln-Pyrmont zur Auslösung des Katastrophenalarms. Besonders stark betroffen waren die Nebenflüsse der Weser – Hamel, Humme und Emmer. Dramatisch war die Lage vor allem entlang der Flut-Hamel im Bereich Rohrsen–Afferde, rund um das Kraftwerk und in den angrenzenden Straßen.
Die Stadt Hameln wandte sich in ihrer Not an die örtliche Garnison, und wie so oft standen die britischen Truppen der Bevölkerung tatkräftig zur Seite. Ritchie Smith, der damals im Einsatz war und als Sanitäter mit einem Krankenwagen bereitstand, erkannte auf einem Foto der Dewezet die Fahrzeuge des 2nd Troop der 23rd Amphibious Engineer Squadron – robuste AEC-LKWs, die zur Hilfe im Einsatz standen.
Die Deister- und Weserzeitung berichtete ausführlich über das Ausmaß des Hochwassers – nicht nur in Hameln, sondern auch in den umliegenden Gemeinden. Neben Feuerwehr und Polizei waren im Raum Lügde–Bad Pyrmont auch Soldaten der Bundeswehr im Einsatz, um bei der Gefahrenabwehr und den Aufräumarbeiten zu unterstützen.
