1992/05/20 – 1992/05/27 – EXERCISE “ATLANTIC DIG I” – Schloß Hämelschenburg

© Lippold von Klencke

This exercise was no exercise of a usual kind! It was an exercise that has been made under the titel “Support and preservation of German culture and monuments”! Any reader of this article looks very clearly know,  how much the British garrison in Hamelin always was involved in public life! The images were kindly provided from the owner of the castle,  Mr Lippold von Klencke, also the “Thank you” – letter to the former Commander! Thank you for this!

Moreover, the castle is worth getting a visit in any case! One of the greatest highlights of the year is the beautiful Christmas market!

I remember completing this job very well. It’s one of my favourite job memories from my time in Hameln. There was around 1m deep of silt that needed to be removed from the moat after it was drained, we almost tipped one of our brand new Hydrema 806 LWT’s near to the sluice gate as it was that soft and deep, I managed to right it before it went over, it was a close call. We dug until we got the moat to a solid, clean base, myself and Danny loading then tipping all the silt into the forest behind the castle via Big Stan in his tipper. Took a few days but we were really happy with the finished result.

I also remember the owner kindly supplying us with some beer to drink in the evening that the moat was refilled by the fire brigade. What great memories of a great job to work on.

    1. Cheers, pal for the story!
