The liaison officer reported a special kind of exercise for the first two days of March 1979: “Ken’s Trident.” The name spoke for itself, as Kenneth Howard OBE RA (26 December 1932 – 11 September 2022), a British artist, had worked for the British Army for many years. He was particularly fascinated by the city of Hameln and the Royal Engineers stationed there, visiting the region on multiple occasions. He created numerous paintings, including a view of Hameln with church and a depiction of the demolition of the Fuhlen Weser Bridge by the 42 Field Squadron RE. In 1980, he also captured the Amphibious Engineers below Marienburg Castle on canvas. A sketchbook of his, detailing Exercise “Spearpoint,” includes paintings from Emmerthal and the Hameln-Pyrmont district.
But back to March 1979: This seems to have been Howard’s first visit to the region. The exercise took place on Thursday, 1 March, and Friday, 2 March. The scene was a crossing of the Weser River at the Hajen Ferry with M2 ferries, starting from Ruhberg with a view towards Hajen. Among those who participated were Andy Rickett, Randy Scott, Bob Mann, Alf Perry, Chic Moore, Scouse “Ginge” Daniels, Geordie Richardson, Mick Dyer, Martin Jan Scarff, Stevie Weeks, and SSGT Steve Simpson.

Der Verbindungsoffizier meldete für die ersten beiden Tage im März 1979 eine besondere Übung an: „Ken’s Trident“. Der Name war Programm, denn Kenneth Howard OBE RA (26. Dezember 1932 – 11. September 2022), ein britischer Künstler, war über viele Jahre hinweg auch für die Britische Armee tätig. Besonders die Stadt Hameln und die dort stationierten Royal Engineers hatten es ihm angetan. Er besuchte die Region mehrfach und schuf zahlreiche Gemälde, darunter eine Ansicht der Hamelner Innenstadt mit Hochzeitshaus und Marktkirche sowie die Darstellung der Sprengung der Fuhlener Weserbrücke durch die 42 Field Squadron RE. Im Jahr 1980 hielt er zudem die Amphibious Engineers unterhalb der Marienburg auf Leinwand fest. Auch existiert ein Skizzenbuch zur Übung „Spearpoint“, das Gemälde aus Emmerthal und dem Landkreis Hameln-Pyrmont enthält.
Doch zurück zum März 1979: In diesem Jahr war Howard anscheinend zum ersten Mal in der Region. Die Übung fand am Donnerstag, den 1. März, und Freitag, den 2. März statt. Schauplatz war ein Weserübergang bei der Hajener Fähre mit M2-Fähren, gestartet vom Ruhberg mit Blick auf Hajen. An der Übung nahmen unter anderem Andy Rickett, Randy Scott, Bob Mann, Alf Perry, Chic Moore, Scouse „Ginge“ Daniels, Geordie Richardson, Mick Dyer, Martin Jan Scarff, Stevie Weeks und SSGT Steve Simpson teil.
