🇬🇧 GUY FAWKES DAY – BONFIRE NIGHT 🇬🇧
Guy Fawkes Day, also known as Bonfire Night, is celebrated each year on the 5th of November in the United Kingdom and other parts of the world. The day commemorates the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, when a group of Catholic conspirators, including Guy Fawkes, attempted to blow up the English Parliament and assassinate King James I. Their aim was to overthrow Protestant rule and restore Catholic power.
Guy Fawkes was responsible for guarding the gunpowder beneath the House of Lords. However, he was discovered, arrested on the night of the 5th of November, and eventually executed. To celebrate the failed plot, the English began lighting bonfires. This tradition continued and, over the centuries, evolved into a celebration featuring fireworks, processions, and effigies (Guy figures) that are burned.
Today, the day symbolises less the religious tensions of that era and has become a national holiday in Britain, promoting fun and a sense of community. “Remember, remember, the Fifth of November” is a well-known phrase that recalls the events of the day.

Guy Fawkes Day, auch bekannt als Bonfire Night, wird jedes Jahr am 5. November in Großbritannien und anderen Teilen der Welt gefeiert. Der Tag erinnert an das Gunpowder Plot von 1605, als eine Gruppe katholischer Verschwörer, darunter Guy Fawkes, versuchte, das englische Parlament in die Luft zu sprengen und König James I. zu ermorden. Das Ziel war es, die protestantische Herrschaft zu stürzen und die Katholiken wieder an die Macht zu bringen.
Guy Fawkes war dafür verantwortlich, das Schießpulver unter dem House of Lords zu bewachen. Er wurde jedoch in der Nacht des 5. November entdeckt, verhaftet und schließlich hingerichtet. Um den gescheiterten Anschlag zu feiern, begannen die Engländer, Freudenfeuer zu entzünden. Diese Tradition setzte sich fort und entwickelte sich im Laufe der Jahrhunderte zu einem Fest mit Feuerwerk, Umzügen und Puppen (Guy-Figuren), die verbrannt werden.
Der Tag symbolisiert in Großbritannien heute weniger die religiösen Spannungen jener Zeit, sondern ist zu einem nationalen Feiertag geworden, der Spaß und Gemeinschaftsgefühl fördert. “Remember, remember, the Fifth of November” ist ein bekannter Spruch, der an die Ereignisse des Tages erinnert.
