In March 1996, the 28 Engineer Regiment embarked on an exercise that would go down in history as the last of its kind involving the M2 ferries. My friend, Eckhard Uhde, was present on that sunny yet very cold day, capturing the event in stunning photographs.

Among those participating were elements of the 12th Regiment Air Defence Regiment Royal Artillery, stationed at the time in Dempsey Barracks, Paderborn. Some units from the regiment were deployed with the UN in Cyprus during this period. Their relatively new Stormer vehicles secured the river crossings against potential air attacks. Additional British troops from Paderborn and Sennelager also crossed the river as part of a marching exercise. Those familiar with the Senne could easily identify the vehicles by their characteristic light dust coating. Among them were older models such as the Land Rover LR109 and an early version of the FV432, both of which Eckhard photographed. Had he known that this type of manoeuvre would soon come to an end, he remarked, he would have taken at least three more rolls of film.

The bridge and ferry operations took place in Höxter at the Bundeswehr’s water training site and near Corvey Castle by the railway bridge. A field camp for the 28 Engineer Regiment was set up near Emmerthal/Lüntorf.

Until recently, I was unaware of the official name of this exercise, which had often been referred to as the “Last Action M2 Bridge”. However, through thorough research and access to valuable documents, I was finally able to identify its name: NEPTUNE’S VISION – a title that perhaps carried a deeper significance.

Im März 1996 trat das 28 Engineer Regiment zu einer Übung an, die als letzte ihrer Art mit den M2-Fähren in die Geschichte eingehen sollte. Mein Freund Eckhard Uhde war an diesem sonnigen, aber sehr kalten Märztag dabei und dokumentierte das Ereignis in beeindruckenden Bildern.

An der Übung nahmen unter anderem auch Teile des 12th Regiment Air Defence Regiment Royal Artillery teil, die damals in den Dempsey Barracks in Paderborn stationiert waren. Einige Einheiten des Regiments waren zu dieser Zeit im UN-Einsatz auf Zypern. Die relativ neuen Stormer-Fahrzeuge sicherten die Flussübergänge gegen mögliche Luftangriffe. Weitere britische Truppen aus Paderborn und dem Sennelager setzten ebenfalls im Rahmen einer Marschübung über den Fluss. Wer die Senne kennt, konnte die Fahrzeuge an ihrem typischen hellen Staubüberzug erkennen. Unter ihnen waren auch ältere Modelle wie der Land Rover LR109 sowie eine frühe Version des FV432, die Eckhard ebenfalls ablichtete. Hätte er gewusst, dass diese Art von Manövern bald ein Ende finden würde, hätte er, so sagte er, noch mindestens drei Filme mehr gemacht.

Die Brücken- und Fähraktivitäten fanden in Höxter am Wasserübungsplatz der Bundeswehr sowie nahe Schloss Corvey in der Nähe der Eisenbahnbrücke statt. Ein Feldlager des 28 Engineer Regiment wurde bei Emmerthal/Lüntorf errichtet.

Bis vor Kurzem war mir der Name dieses Manövers unbekannt und es wurde oft nur unter „Last Action M2 Bridge“ geführt. Doch durch gründliche Recherchen und den Zugang zu wertvollen Dokumenten konnte ich endlich den offiziellen Namen herausfinden: NEPTUNE’S VISION – ein Titel, der vielleicht eine tiefere Bedeutung hatte.
