The NAAFI in Hameln was opened
The Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes (NAAFI) were established by the British government to provide service personnel stationed around the world with a sense of home. In addition to clubs, bars, and canteens, NAAFI also operates supermarkets supplying daily essentials. In 1967, there were 110 clubs, 85 stores for army and air force personnel, and 69 family shops in Germany. Depending on the location, the range of shops varied from small grocery stores to large department stores. The goal was to offer soldiers access to familiar shopping options, with goods shipped directly from England. Unfortunately, only military personnel and their families were allowed to shop at NAAFI.
The NAAFI shop on Iphulweg in Hameln was formally opened by Mrs. Cowtan, the wife of the Hameln garrison commander. She ceremoniously cut the ribbon stretched between the entrance doors. The shop’s first manager, Mrs. Fullerton, had already worked in other NAAFI facilities in Germany for 17 years. At the time, in addition to British families, Belgian soldiers and their dependents were also allowed to shop there. As a special treat for the opening, the first customer received a large surprise package from Mrs. Cowtan, while the 50th and 100th customers were also presented with special gifts.

Die NAAFI in Hameln wurde eröffnet
Die Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes (NAAFI) wurden von der britischen Regierung gegründet, um den Angehörigen der Streitkräfte an ihren weltweiten Standorten ein Stück Heimat zu bieten. Neben Clubs, Bars und Kantinen betreibt die NAAFI auch Supermärkte für den täglichen Bedarf. 1967 gab es in Deutschland 110 Clubs, 85 Verkaufsstellen für Armee- und Luftwaffenpersonal sowie 69 Geschäfte für Familien. Das Angebot reichte je nach Standort von Lebensmittelläden bis hin zu großen Kaufhäusern. Ziel war es, den Soldaten heimische Einkaufsmöglichkeiten mit Waren aus England bereitzustellen. Der Zugang war jedoch ausschließlich Militärangehörigen und ihren Familien vorbehalten.
Der NAAFI-Shop in der Iphulstraße in Hameln wurde feierlich von Mrs. Cowtan, der Ehefrau des Hamelner Garnisonskommandeurs, eröffnet. Mit einer Schere durchschnitt sie das Band, das symbolisch zwischen den Eingangstüren gespannt war. Die erste Geschäftsführerin des Standorts, Mrs. Fullerton, hatte bereits 17 Jahre Erfahrung in anderen NAAFI-Einrichtungen in Deutschland. Neben britischen Familien durften auch Soldaten und Angehörige der belgischen Streitkräfte hier einkaufen. Zur Eröffnung erhielt die erste Kundin von Mrs. Cowtan ein großes Überraschungspaket, und auch die 50. und 100. Kundin wurden mit besonderen Geschenken bedacht.
