9 INDEPENDENT PARACHUTE SQUADRON RE

9 INDEPENDENT PARACHUTE SQUADRON RE

1948 – 1951

Auf der Squadron Hauptseite habe ich einen Hinweis von Paddy bekommen, das in Hameln auch diese Squadron stationiert gewesen sein soll.

Ich konnte es nicht glauben, aber ich habe diese Information von

Wendy George I Assistant Editor  I Airborne Assault  I  IWM Duxford   I  www.paradata.org.uk  I

I got a hint on the squadron mainpage, that the Squadron  also was settled in Hameln. I couldn’t believe but i got this Information

9Sqn also visited in 1962. Lobbed into Sennelager ranges and bridging galloped over Germany. Arrived at Hamelin. I think we stayed for a week or so. They wouldn’t let us play with the lafby!!I remember I think we ran over the span of the town bridge. Anyway having caused havoc we continued our bridging gallop. I think the Weser was closed but our bridge didn’t reach. Capt Mainwaring would have been proud. Great time though, fags one shilling for twenty senior service.

    1. Brilliant information, thanks mate!

My husband Harold Partridge was a member of the above squadron and was there after serving in Palestine.
Whilst in Germany he took, part in the Bailey Bridge Building competition at the Royal Tournament in London.
Unfortunately he now has Alzheimer’s but his memories of these times are stronger than most recent times.
I would be very interested in a copy of “history of the Airborne Sappers 1948-1984” I can’t find this on Amazon but will look elsewhere.
His favourite memories of this time are playing football on the side of the river Weser!

I am one of a small team of amateur military history enthusiasts researching and recording the early days of the British Army in Germany

I have carried out a detailed study into the deployment of 2/16 Parachute Brigade who were in Germany from Spring 1947 till Autumn 1949.

I can confirm that 9 Squadron were indeed in Hameln. According to my sources they arrived in mid Summer 1948 from Palestine and left for Aldershot in Autumn 1949 with the rest of the Brigade.

One additional item which ParaData appear unaware. According to the Quarterly Historical Record for Hamburg District for the Second Quarter of 1948 3 Parachute Field Squadron RE moved to Hameln from Neumunster to form a small cadre of Paratroop trained Sappers prior to the arrival of 9 Squadron. (you can find more detail in the book “History of the Airborne Sappers 1948-1984)

    Hope this is of interest.
